ABOUT MALTA - GENERAL
LANGUAGES AND MONETARY UNIT
The
main language of the Islands is the Maltese language, a semitic
language built up from Arabic and Italian languages, and is spoken only
by Maltese Citezens. The English language is spoken by nearly all
Maltese Citezens, as our second language, and there is a good number of
schools on the Island, that teaches the English language to foreing
students from all over European Countries. The Italian language can be
spoken by a good number of Maltese Citezens, and is considered to
be, not officially, the third language for the Maltese Islands.
Our
Monetary unit is the Ewro, (€), the official currency in the EU, and
used by many Countries within the EU. This € currency had replaced the
Maltese Lira. Both the English Stirling, and the US Dollar are
wellcomed by many commercial activities on the Islands, especially in
touristic zones.
POPULATION
The
Population of the Maltese Islands is around 400,000 Thousand People,
and the main industry is Tourism, while there is an ongoing increase in
the IT sector, with many foreign companies coming to set their base in
Malta, knowing the very good standard of knowledge the Maltese possess,
and the excellent stability of the Maltese Government.
In
fact, a very ambitious project called (Smart City), is on plan to be
built to accommodate over five thousand workers, directly in this
sector, with interest from the middle east.

- 1st May, Workers Day. - Workers memorial Day – (Public Holiday)
- 7th
June, Sette Giugno. - Memorial Day of four Maltese Citezens killed by
the armed forces in 1917, in a Civil Protest against the British, for
not treating the Maltese well – (National Holiday)
- 29th June, Feast of St Peter & St Paul, locally called as (l-Imnarja) (Public Holiday)
- 15th
August, Feast of the Assumption, A feast celebrated since World War 2,
as the Convoy of St Mary arrived to save the Maltese Citezens that were
suffering great shortages of every day needs such as food and medicens
(Public Holiday)
- 8th September, Victory Day over the Turks, in the Great Siege of 1565 – (National Holiday)
- 21st September, Independence Day – (National Holiday)
- 8th December, Feast of the Immaculate Conception – (Public Holiday)
- 13th December, Republic Day – (National Holiday)
- 25th December, Christmas Day – The Birth of Jesus Christ – (Public Holiday)
Maltese
Citezens Celebrate all these feasts, as well as the traditional local
feasts, celebrated in every Town and Village during the hot Summer
Months.
These feasts are celebrated in style, during the summer
season, with band marches performing in the streets, fire works,
colourful decorations, and everything that gives life to a happy feast.
One can also find the traditionall Maltese Nougat, (Qubbajt), a much
desired desert during the feasts.
The Karnival, in February, San
Girgor, after Easter, and L-Imnarja, in June are still being celebrated
by the Maltese, and are part of our Culture and Folklor. Other
folklor Feasts, such as (Notte Biancha), in Valletta, Mdinafest, held
in Mdina, Birgufest, held in Birgu, and Summer nights, (Lejla Sajfija),
organized by many localities, gives more brightness and colour to these
Islands.

FOOD AND DRINKS
Maltese
Traditional Food Dishes, such as Bragioli, Stuffed Pork, Beef or Lamb
cooked in oven with potatoes and onions, locally caught fresh
fish, such as (lampuki), and a large variety of foreign cuisine,
especially from our neighbouring Mediterranean Countries, are served
from several Hotels, Restaurants, and Traditional Bars.
Stuffat
tal-Fenek, (Stewed Rabbit), Maltese Ftira, (Bread), with oil, Bigilla,
made from beans, Bebbux bl-arjoli, (snails in very hot sauce), are just
a few Traditional Maltese Food every visitor must try when visiting our
Islands. Pizza is served everywhere, in our Maltese way, and is quite a
delicious plate, sought after by locals and foreigners.
Locally
grown agricultural products, (fruit and vegetables) such as melons,
watermelons, figs, strawberries, grapes, peaches, tomatoes, potatoes,
onions, cabbages, cauliflowers, garlic, etc; are very rich in taste and
proteins, as they absorb the adequate sunlight they require as they
mature.
Traditional
Local Wines and Beers is found everywhere, together with foreign ones
from nearly all Countries that produces them, like Italy, Spain,
France, Germany, Holland, Australia, and Portugal.
Definitely, every visitor will surely satisfy his apetite, and thirst.
