BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MALTESE ISLANDS

The Maltese Islands, has a very rich History dating as back as over five thousand years before the arrival of Jesus Christ. Our Prehistory, is perhaps the richest of all nations.

Malta, the largest Island of the Archipelago, and her smaller sister Island of Gozo, enjoys the oldest free standing Megalitic Temples of the World, dating back well about six thousand years ago, over a thousand years older than the Great Pyramids of Egypt.

Our first inhabitants must have come here from Sicily, the largest Island of the Mediterranean Sea, and still our Magestic Prehistoric Temples are the oldest. This Mystery must have an explanation. What must have made these primitive inhabitants built such marvellous Temples so artfully and cleverly, that they even resembles a calendar year? (Mnajdra Temple) for example. Perhaps the explanation of all this mystery comes in the following answer.

These primitive men had lived in Sicily, were the climate must have been much colder, were the dangers from ferocious animals, like wolves, must have been very threatening, and were the eruptions from the Etna, the largest volcano in Europe, must have been so treacherous and terrifying. Little they know what it must have been, and considering the eruptions as a punishment from there Gods, must have been a justified reason for them to leave Sicily, and come to our Islands. As they arrived in Malta and Gozo, they soon discovered how warm and welcoming our Islands were to them, with warmer weather, no danger from large animals, and no threat from the terrible volcano, that they immediately started to warship  their Gods for being so kind in helping them landing on a true Heaven on Earth.

This must have been the very reason why they started building the oldest Temples in the World. Nowadays, well over seven thousand years, our beautiful Islands are still welcoming Tourists and visitors from all over the World, and inviting them to enjoy with us our beautiful Islands.

MALTA THROUGH THE AGES

From approximately a thousand years before the arrival of Jesus Christ, till his present life on Earth with us, the Maltese Islands were ruled by the Phoenicians, the Greeks, the Carthaginians, and the Roman Empire, all of which had left us with a rich culture and remains. A special event in our History, is the shipwreck of Saint Paul, in sixty AD, an event that turned the Maltese inhabitants, Catholic from Paganism beliefs.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, about 400 years AD, the Byzanthines dominated our Islands, followed by the Arabs, who conquered us in the year 870 AD, until the arrival of Count Roger of Sicily. In the year 1530, Malta was granted to the Knights of St'John of Jerusalem.
Perhaps, one of the greatest events of our History, was the invasion of the Turks in the Great Siege, in 1565, an event that left the Maltese Victorious over the Turks, who were terrifying the Mediterranean seas, under the rule of Ottaman.

After a peaceful ara under the Knights of St'John, Napoleon Bonaparte, a French leader, seized the Islands in 1798. A year after, the Maltese citezens rebelled to his treacherous rule, and with the help of the British, took over the rule of the Islands.

Another event in our History, was World War 2, in the early 1940's. The mayor events of our History in our recent times are the Independence Day,  21st  September, 1964, The Republic of Malta, 13th December, 1974, Freedom Day, 31st March, 1979, The full Membership of Malta in the European Union, on the 1st of May, 2004, and the adoption of the Euro (€) currency as our Monetary unit, from 1st January, 2008.
